Obsidian Tide

I love working with this vase shape—it continues to challenge and inspire me. The Obsidian Tide is one of several pieces I’ve shared or have in progress, each presenting its own unique challenges and discoveries. Shaped with care and intent, this vase is a study in depth and movement. Its black foundation serves as a canvas for layered glazes—Pistachio Shino and Blue Shino—flowing like currents across its form. With each brushstroke, and the subsequent firing, subtle variations emerged, somewhat unpredictable yet harmonious. The surface, rich with interplay, shifts under light, echoing the rhythm of tides against darkened stone. This piece embodies contrast and cohesion—a balance of controlled technique and the organic spontaneity.
